Stars & Stripes Win the Blenheim Challenge at Agria Blenheim International Horse Trials
Riders shine in the Show Jumping as Stars & Stripes take the inaugural title 12.5-4.
The Stars & Stripes have been crowned winners of the Blenheim Challenge at the Agria Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials, finishing the inaugural team competition with a convincing 12.5-4 victory over the Rising Lions.
Having established an unassailable lead across the first two phases, the Stars & Stripes arrived for the final day knowing the Challenge was theirs, but there was still plenty to play for as both teams went head-to-head in the Show Jumping, with individual points and a share of an additional £20,000 prize fund on offer.
The final phase delivered plenty of competitive spirit, with both teams determined to finish their Blenheim Challenge on a high.
Rising Lions’ Jess Rimmer was first into the arena, producing a clear round with just 0.4 time penalties before handing over to Stars & Stripes’ Tommy Greengard after the lunch break, who responded with a clear inside the time to secure the point.
“It’s the journey not just with the horse but with the team,” said Rimmer. Blenheim is special without the Rising Lions and now it’s ten times more so. It’s just such a special end to our season.”
Greengard, who had been paired with Rimmer throughout the Challenge, reflected on the team spirit that has defined the competition.
“He was great. I had the fortune to be paired up with Jess this week. She’s brought out the best in me. The point of this is to become friends and push ourselves and we couldn’t be happier with the horse.”
The Rising Lions continued to battle, with Josh Levett finishing with one fence down and 0.8 time penalties, before Stars & Stripes’ Olivia Dutton delivered a clear with just 0.8 time penalties to add later in the day. With Dutton carrying the team’s Joker, the result was worth double points and took the Stars & Stripes to 11.5 points.
Dutton said “I’m very happy we were able to deliver. I feel so lucky to have the ride on the horse. He’s pretty incredible. To come here alongside the Rising Lions and to compete on the team is great. We’re just happy to have been able to come.”
In the battle between Stars & Stripes Grace Taylor and Rising Lions’ Isabelle Cook, Taylor came out on top, with a clear round with just time to add in the morning’s session.
The final Rising Lions rider, Isabelle Cook would later face the pressure of matching her opponent, finishing with three fences down, adding 12 jumping penalties to her score and confirming the Stars & Stripes’ final winning tally of 12.5-4.
The final rider of the Blenheim Challenge was Stars & Stripes’ Oliver Barrett, who had already secured 0.5 points from his head-to-head after his Rising Lions opponent, Barnie Brotherton, retired on Cross Country the previous day. Barrett completed the Show Jumping course clear, securing the £5,000 head-to-head bonus, to be shared with his groom.
As part of the prize fund available to the Challenge winners, £5,000 was available to their chosen charity. Stars & Stripes have chosen to donate their share of the prize pot to Work to Ride, supporting an incredible local charity that works with under-resourced urban youth.
“We’re proud to give in a small way to an incredible local charity to us who supports under-resourced urban youth, giving them opportunities to discover horsemanship, equine sports and education,” said Philip Dutton.
The Blenheim Challenge has brought a new dimension to Agria Blenheim, with the Stars & Stripes and Rising Lions competing across Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping in a unique head-to-head format.
Across three days of competition, both teams have delivered strong performances while building a genuine sense of camaraderie and team spirit. For the Stars & Stripes, that consistency has ultimately delivered the inaugural Blenheim Challenge title, with a final score of 12.5-4.
